The beauty of barrel samples

Whenever Byron, our winemaker, brings in barrel samples, they look like this;

These two in particular are unfiltered barrel samples of his two chardonnays; one from the Gran Moraine Vineyard and one from Willakia Vineyard. Barrel samples are great because they allow you to taste the wine in it’s early stages. Before it goes into a bottle, before it ages and before it gets fined and filtered (as most whites do–people tend to like crystal clear white wines).

I found the Willakia’s minerality more interesting at this stage, but the Gran Moraine had such a lovely floral bouquet and fruit notes that I think I enjoyed that more.
