Wine tasting expeditions – Ponzi

Ponzi Vineyards makes the most delicious ice-wine-style Vino Gelato. You just need to try it! It has pears and apricots, a wonderful nose and a nice full mouth feel that comes with ice wine. It’s amazing. I also enjoyed all the other wines I tried out of their extensive collection!

I tried their 2011 Chardonnay, aged in all stainless steel for a crisp yet …I want to say relaxed? Chardonnay. It smelled like tropical fruit with a hint of guava. Their 2012 Pinot blanc was a little tart but the 2011 Tavola Pinot noir was full of nice pepper, cherries, dark fruit and balancing acid.

And finally, the most amazing wine I’ve had in a while; the Muscat Riesling ice wine. If you have a chance, go get a bottle of 2012 Ponzi Vino Gelato. It is wonderfully balanced with acidity so the sugar isn’t overpowering.

Find a selection of amazing wine at Ponzi any day between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the corner of 99W and SW 7th St. in Dundee, OR 97115.

I went back and tried their “red eye” side-by-side flight of Ponzi Pinot noirs and they are making some great 2011s. I tried their 2011 Tavola (which I liked better this time, possibly because it had some time to sit), 2011 Willamette Valley Pinot noir (nice peppery spice and earth/minerality that comes with the vintage) and 2009 Reserve Pinot noir (bolder). I also took a sip of their 12 Pinot gris, which has a bigger fruit profile than their blanc.
